ADHD and Depression Part 2

July 17th, 2008 · No Comments

When a doctor diagnoses someone with depression, he will compare symptoms against an algorithm. This algorithm is used to diagnosis the correct mental disorder. When someone is diagnosed with depression, it goes way beyond feeling sad and feeling that blue feeling that we all get sometimes.

Symptoms that go along with depression usually last for a week or longer, and are usually associated with thoughts of suicide as well as threats of suicide.

Depression in both adults and children with ADHD is effectively treated with psychological treatment as well as medication. New research has shown that people who are treated psychologically alone are much more successful than those who are treated with just medication, or medicine along with therapy.

The most important thing taken from all of these studies is that everyone should be sensitive to those who have ADHD, and should keep an eye out for any symptoms of depression. No one should ever assume the symptoms are only because of ADHD.

If you or a family member has been diagnosed with ADHD and you or someone else suspects there should also be a diagnosis of depression, it is best to talk with you physician. Those who are diagnosed early get the needed treatment as soon as possible, and usually have a greater rate of success.
